Microsoft Will Allegedly Replace Windows Live Messenger with Skype

Microsoft is allegedly preparing to replace its Windows Live Messenger chat application with Skype chat, according to a report on Monday from The Verge. It’s a compelling change for the company, especially because we’re quite certain Microsoft powers the chat system in Windows Phone 8’s “Rooms” feature with Windows Live Messenger. Perhaps it will occur on the desktop, first, and then trickle down into mobile.

We imagine that if it does replace Windows Live Messenger with Skype, the chat function in WP8 Rooms could easily expand to other platforms. For now, you can only chat with other Windows Phone 8 devices.

Here’s where we are a bit surprised, though: The Verge says the change could occur as early as next week. That seems odd, at least on the mobile side, since Windows Phone 8 devices are just now starting to hit the market.

Microsoft has not yet commented on the report.
